Are you curious about the spacesuits that will keep astronauts safe as they travel to space and back?
Take a behind-the-scenes look at how a new spacesuit was designed for astronauts preparing to travel on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft.
In a recent Space4U podcast hosted by the Space Foundation, Dr. Kavya Manyapu, a space scientist working on the Starliner, explains what went into designing the new suit and how her background inspired her to help humans explore beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Drawing on inspiration from past spacesuits, Dr. Manyapu and her team helped design a suit that is 40% lighter than its predecessors – giving astronauts more flexibility and comfort during launch and re-entry.
In order to develop the best suit possible, the Starliner team sought advice from astronauts who had worn past spacesuits and drew design inspiration from science fiction movies – yes, science fiction movies.
