International tensions are rising and the U.S. Navy must be able to deter threats before they reach American shores.

The P-8A Poseidon is the Navy’s multi-purpose, technologically advanced sub hunter. It is the only aircraft that can detect and track adversarial submarines and is also used for anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Dear:

Adversarial nations are investing in their naval operations. In particular, they’re modernizing and expanding their submarine fleets in preparation for offensive missions against the United States.

That’s why I urge you to prioritize the P-8A Poseidon program.

The P-8A Poseidon, known as the “sub hunter,” is the only long-range aircraft capable of detecting and tracking foreign submarines. Over the past several years, there have been various reports of foreign submarine sightings, including activity in the North Atlantic Ocean and in waters mere miles from Washington, D.C.

Foreign threats like these have doubled since the 1950s, but America’s ability to combat them doesn’t meet our nation’s most basic needs. The warfighting requirement for the P-8 Poseidon is 138, but the Navy falls short by 10 aircraft.

Without additional federal funding, the P-8A Poseidon program is in flux. That creates uncertainty on many fronts. First, it would mean the Navy’s capabilities to detect, track, and stop foreign submarines would continue to be hamstrung.

Importantly, it would also mean a major disruption in the sub hunter’s supply chain, which supports more than 60,000 jobs and over 600 supplier companies in 41 states. Some of these businesses would be forced to close their doors. That would not only mean loss of jobs and production, but loss of ability to repair and replace spare parts for the existing P-8A fleet.

While many defense programs are riddled with delays and come in over budget, the P-8A Poseidon is not one of them. In fact, it is more than $2 billion ahead of cost over its lifetime and it’s consistently been delivered either on time or early. It’s a model acquisition program for the Navy and it’s essential to our nation’s national security.

Congress must recognize the growing threats against our nation and do everything in its power to bolster national defense efforts. That includes investment in the P-8A Poseidon program.

Please take action and make the P-8A Poseidon a funding priority for Fiscal Year 2024.

Threats against the U.S. from adversarial nations get more serious with each passing day. This is particularly true in international waters. Enemy navies are expanding and advancing their submarine fleets and preparing for war. The U.S. needs a strong national defense to counter such threats and defend our borders.

Tell Congress to invest in the P-8A Poseidon – America’s only aircraft able to detect and track adversarial submarines at long range. It will be the key to successful naval missions and keeping the fight away from our shores.
