The Army Needs Modernized Chinooks

In 2017, the U.S. Army certified to Congress that modernizing the Chinook to the F Block II configuration was a critical modernization priority. Then, less than 24 months later, the Army abandoned its support for the program. Without funding, the production line of this combat critical pivotal helicopter is at significant risk with no actionable plan to replace it.

The Army made a commitment to American soldiers that it would invest in a heavy-lift helicopter with more lift and more reach, and the CH-47F Block II is ready to deliver on that commitment. With the advanced CH-47F Block II, the Chinook will meet our Nation’s critical, heavy-lift missions for decades to come.

While the silhouette of Chinook may look the same as did back in the 1960’s, it is far and away a substantively different aircraft. When it was first introduced, the Chinook lifted approximately 11,000 pounds. Now, with CH-47F Block II will lift more than 22,000 pounds. As you may know, the Army first developed the Chinook in the 1960s as a multi-mission heavy-lift helicopter to revolutionize troop, ammunition, and equipment transport. Since then, the Chinook has evolved with a digital advanced flight control system, common avionics architecture system, advanced air frame, improved drive system and new fuel system. America’s Army – the Active Component, Army National Guard units across 25 states, and three U.S. Army Reserve units, American allies around the globe depend on the Chinook to deliver heavy lift capability wherever called to do so.

The Chinook will be a mainstay Army helicopter beyond 2050. It only makes sense to invest in critical upgrades that will keep it dynamic and effective in an ever-changing military landscape.

The Chinook is a national program with more than 350 suppliers across 42 states in support of more than 26,000 total jobs. America’s manufacturing base is still recovering after the economic devastation caused by COVID-19. Continued investment in the CH-47F Block II program ensures sustained investment in American workers, and continued advanced capability for those who wear our nation’s uniform.
