California has a long history of protecting lands for future generations through conservation easements. That history and future protections are in jeopardy because of behind closed door deals and last minute attempts of the California legislature to do away with the authority of these conservation easements.

I urge you to slow down the hasty passage of SB633, which would have unintended consequences related to the conservation of open space in California.

This legislation, which was amended with less than a week left in the legislative session, will endanger current and future land conservation efforts across the state. Please slow down this measure so it can be appropriately vetted through the traditional legislative process.

SB633 was drafted in secret and advanced without any feedback from the public. The legislature hasn’t heard from land owners, land trusts, impacted communities, and other important stakeholders. What is clear is that SB633 is likely to have unintended consequences.

I respectfully urge you to exercise your discretion and slow this legislation down. There is no reason that proponents of the policy contained in SB633 should be allowed to circumvent the full legislative process. This issue is too important to communities across California to be considered in a handful of days.
