Tell Congress Our Navy Needs the F/A-18 Super Hornet

It’s not enough to achieve air superiority. To keep the nation safe from our adversaries, the United States must secure air supremacy. The only way to achieve this goal is through a diverse fighter fleet that features the F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet.

The Navy’s tactical aviation fleet is facing a shortfall. That same shortfall will increase without the previously budgeted F/A-18 Super Hornets set for production.

The F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet plays a critical role in America’s national defense strategy and it must remain the backbone of our naval aerial fleet.

The Navy’s tactical aviation fleet is facing a shortfall of aircraft. It will get worse this year without the previously budgeted F/A-18 Super Hornet’s set for production. Diversity is key to success in every aspect of life. It’s particularly true when it comes to our national defense. That’s why I’m urging you to support diversity in our naval fighter fleet by supporting the F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet.

The Block III Super Hornets and Growlers are the only naval aviation program to reach and maintain the Navy’s readiness objectives of 80 percent. New aircraft have the most immediate and profound impact on the tactical aviation inventory and fleet readiness. Block III enhancements include increased computing power to process large amounts of data and streamline communication with future manned and unmanned Navy platforms, passive detection and tracking of stealthy targets at a longer distance (infrared search and track), a new highly digitized Advanced Cockpit System, an improved stealth signature, and an upgraded 10,000 hour service life.

The upgraded Super Hornet is also an asset to the economy. Employing tens of thousands of people in 44 states, the F/A-18 Super Hornet program has an estimated annual impact of $3 billion. Of that, 70 cents of every dollar for the program flow through 800 supplier companies, 500 of which are small businesses.

The Super Hornet is versatile. It can be used as a fighter and an attack aircraft and is designed to carry out air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The technology built into the Block III Super Hornet can be updated as needed, ensuring the aircraft can meet the needs of a changing mission. It fills critical capability gaps left by other aircraft in its class and is ready to deploy right now. In a tumultuous global environment, this makes the Super Hornet a necessity for our naval fleet.

Despite these facts, the Navy has chosen to pre-maturely end the production of Super Hornets. Apparently the Navy would rather operate with a strike fighter shortfall and place the lives of our naval aviators and our nation’s defense at risk rather than continue funding Super Hornet production.

As your constituent, I urge you to prioritize the Super Hornet program.

Our national security, the safety of our deployed troops, and our economy depends on a capable and diverse fighter fleet.

Please protect against further cuts to military readiness by supporting funding for 12 F/A-18 Block III Super Hornets in the fiscal year 2022 budget.
