The future of the AH-64 Apache is uncertain.

The proposed 2026 White House budget doesn’t provide essential funding for the Apache program. Without it out, the remanufacture line for the Army faces permanent shutdown. The consequences of that are alarming.

The AH-64 Apache debuted in the 1970s during the Cold War with the critical mission of countering one of the greatest geopolitical threats of that time, an invasion of West Germany by the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact forces. It has been a critical program for the US Army in nearly every military engagement ever since.

From performing surveillance, security, and strike missions in Panama to proving its anti-tank and long-range armed reconnaissance capabilities in Operation Desert Storm, the Apache proved its worth time and again as an asset for the Army.

This elite attack helicopter was modernized in the 1990s to include Longbow radar, giving it the ability to remain obscured while still observing the battlefield. In the early 2000s, it provided close in-fire support for ground forces in Afghanistan and proved its capabilities to operate in harsh environments. It also went through another modernization to enhance pilot operability and improve overall safety during night missions.

Today, it represents the best attack helicopter in our military arsenal. The “Echo” model provides the cutting-edge technology to usher in the newest era of aerial rotorcraft warfare, including Joint Tactical Information Distribution Systems digital communication and the ability to control unmanned aerial vehicles. In a modern warfare environment, the Apache’s manned-unmanned teaming and launched effects capabilities allow it to quarterback the battlefield. The Apache is open systems enabled, integrating new technology at speed and scale to win the war of today and tomorrow.

Fully transitioning the current Apache fleet to its “Echo” model must be a priority for the Army and Congress in the next National Defense Authorization Act and defense appropriations. The Army’s decision not to move forward with Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) has left a critical capabilities gap that only the Apache can fill, and drones have not yet reached the maturity and scale needed to succeed in both the attack and reconnaissance missions.

Further, it is a program that many of our allies around the world rely on, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Poland, and many others.

As your constituent, I urge you to voice your support and use your voting power to prioritize the AH-64E Apache. It’s the epitome of a battle-tested, proven, and successful military platform with the technology to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.
